Colon Cancer, Incidence, Causation, Diagnosis, Treatment and Prognosis

Colon cancer is cancer of the large intestine (colon), the lower part of your digestive system. Colon cancer is the second most common cancer in the USA with equal distribution between men and women. Colon cancer usually affects people over the age of 40, with the majority of people who are diagnosed with the condition being over 60 years of age. Colon cancer may affect any racial or ethnic group; however, some studies suggest that Americans of northern European heritage have a higher-than-average risk of colon cancer.

INCIDENCE
Colon cancer is more common in industrialized nations and in those societies where red meat is a major part of the diet, although evidence tends to suggest that merely changing your diet to white meat and seafood as in for instance Japan, tends to just swap stomach cancer for colon cancer. In almost all cases colon cancer is a treatable disease if caught early.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
Colon cancer usually begins with the growth of benign growths such as polyps. Often there are no early symptoms. If signs and symptoms of colon cancer do appear, they may include: a change in your bowel habits, including diarrhea or constipation or a change in the consistency of your stool for more than a couple of weeks, rectal bleeding or blood in your stool, persistent abdominal discomfort, such as cramps, gas or pain, abdominal pain with a bowel movement, a feeling that your bowel doesn’t empty completely, weakness or fatigue and unexplained weight loss.

CAUSES
Colon cancer’s exact cause is unknown, but it appears to be influenced by both inherited and environmental factors. Studies show a concentration in areas of higher economic development suggesting a relationship to diet, particularly excess animal fat and low fiber. Other factors that increase the risk of developing colon cancer are: age over 40, the presence of other diseases of the digestive tract, family history and ulcerative colitis.
Development of colon cancer at an early age, or at multiple sites, or recurrent colon cancer, suggests a genetically transmitted form of the disease as opposed to the sporadic form. There also is a slight increased risk for colon cancer in the individual who smokes.
The most common colon cancer cell type is adenocarcinoma which accounts for 95% of cases.

DIAGNOSIS
The development of polyps of the colon usually precedes the development of colon cancer by five or more years. The American Gastroenterologial Association revised its screening guidelines in 2003 to recommend that people with two or more first-degree relatives with colorectal cancer or a first-degree relative with colon or rectal cancer before age 60 should have a screening colonoscopy beginning at age 40 or beginning 10 years prior to the age of the earlier colon cancer diagnosis in their family (whichever is earliest). Those with a first-degree relative diagnosed with colon cancer after age 60 or two second-degree relative with colon or rectal cancer should begin screening at age 40 with one of the methods listed above, such as annual sigmoidoscopy. The most common colon cancer screening tests are colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, and fecal occult blood test.
CT scans and Barium enemas are also routinely used for diagnosis of colon and rectal cancers.

TREATMENT
Almost all colon cancers are treated with surgery first, regardless of stage. The malignant tumor, adjacent tissues and any lymph nodes that may contain cancer cells are removed.
In colon cancer, chemotherapy after surgery is usually only given if the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes (Stage III). Radiation therapy may also be used to induce tumor regression. As with other cancer treatments, the incidence of side effects varies with patient health and the exact nature of the treatment.

PREVENTION
There is not an absolute method for preventing colon cancer. Still, there are steps an individual can take to dramatically lessen the risk or to identify the precursors of colon cancer so that it does not manifest itself. People who turn age 50, and all of those with a history of colon cancer in their families, should speak with their physicians about the most recent screening recommendations from physician and cancer organizations. They should watch for symptoms and attend all recommended screenings to increase the likelihood of catching colon cancer early. Exercise is believed to reduce the risk of colon cancer. Apparently, no association exists between frequency of bowel movement or laxative use and risk of colon cancer.

PROGNOSIS
Prognosis depends on the stage of the disease and the overall health of the patient. If diagnosed early, before the tumor has spread from the bowel, these treatments are very effective, with about 90% of patients alive five years after diagnosis. If the colon cancer does not come back (recur) within 5 years, it is considered cured. Prognosis is poor in patients with liver and lung metastases.

Guidelines for Penis Hygiene – A Clean Manhood for Life

There’s no arguing that a fresh, clean penis is just more appealing, but there is more to penis hygiene than just attracting a partner for an intimate encounter. Self-care and grooming are also important to good health, and while skipping a shower now and then probably won’t cause any long-term problems, constantly neglecting the equipment can spell big trouble. Fortunately, adequate penis care does not require a huge investment of time or money, once a man knows what is needed to keep the package in top form.

Why penis hygiene is important
Given its position in terms of male anatomy, the penis is generally enclosed in a warm, humid environment that provides the ideal haven for invaders such as bacterial and fungal spores. Under the right conditions, these organisms can flourish, causing infections, itching, burning, unpleasant rashes, and a host of other problems that most men could do without.

On top of these issues, of course, are the various bodily fluids that are produced in the area, and a combination of sweat, stale urine, semen and body oils can accumulate and wreak havoc if left to ripen for too long. Aside from minor skin infections, men who are a bit lax in the cleansing department may be at greater risk for STDs and even penile cancer.

If these problems are not motivating enough for a man to take a few extra minutes polishing the family jewels, he should keep in mind that problems like foul odors, an unhealthy appearance or simply raw, roughened skin are likely to make a potential partner think twice about letting that particular organ anywhere near them.

Guidelines for penis care

1. Wash – This step should be followed daily; if a bath or a shower is not available, then a visit to the bathroom sink will also do the trick. The penis should be washed with warm water and a mild cleanser – no harsh soaps, please – and men who are uncut should take care to (gently) pull back the foreskin and clean away any accumulated material. The fingertips are generally all that is needed for this job; for men who prefer a little extra help, a soft cloth will do.

2. Dry – Moisture that becomes trapped underneath the foreskin can encourage the overgrowth of yeast or bacteria, so it is important to let the area dry thoroughly before replacing the foreskin. Patting gently with a soft towel and then waiting a few moments to air-dry can help ward off yeast infections and reduce unpleasant odors.

3. Inspect – After washing, men should take the opportunity to get up close and personal with the package, viewing it from all angles and making note of any unusual growths, discolorations, bruises or bumps. A mirror can be helpful at this stage to catch the view from below.

4. Protect – For men who are sexually active, barrier protection is an absolute must for every encounter, unless they are in an exclusive, monogamous relationship where both partners have received a clean bill of health. Keeping it covered can prevent contact with body fluids and lubes that can cause irritation, as well as protecting against communicable disease.

An extra nutrient boost for optimum penile health
Keeping the penis clean and protecting it from potential problems are essential measures for avoiding future problems, but men who are serious about good health can take an extra step in ensuring good hygiene, active disease-fighting ability, and overall good health. Applying a penis health formula (health professionals recommend Man 1 Man Oil) that is fortified with penile-specific vitamins, amino acids, antioxidants, and natural emollients can provide the nutrients the penis needs to function at its prime. Massaging a penis cream into the penile skin after a daily shower can give men an additional edge when it comes to good health.

Nasopharyngeal Cancer Detection and Cure

Nasopharyngeal cancer or NP cancer is one the popular types of cancer causing death in Asian Groups particularly in southern China. History record of these disease shows that male are more affected than female with a ratio of 2:1. NP cancer has high chances of occurrence in the age of 50-54, whereas its early symptoms can start from the age of 15 to 20. There can be several reasons of NP cancer including diet, viruses and genetic structure. For instance, it is believed that in areas like southern China and North Africa, the major cause of NP cancer is diet of the people living in these areas. People living in these areas are habitual if cooking salt-cured food and meat. Cooking such kind of food releases nitrosamines the air which can stick to the membrane of nasopharynx that can lead to development of NP cancer later on.

NP cancer occurs in the upper part of throat, just behind the nose where the auditory tubes connects with rest of the respiratory tracks along with nasal passages. The early symptoms of NP cancer include high grade fever or a lump in the throat. Once you will visit the doctor with fever, lump in neck and pain in the nasal cavity, he will go through a thorough physical examination and will ask of your medical as well as family history (as one cause of the disease is genetic transmission). Your doctor can recommend you to an ENT specialist as well who will examine you further and may suggest some test.

Once the early symptoms are recognized, the patient is asked to go through NP Cancer testing. There are several ways to detect the NP cancer. Previously it was difficult to get the disease diagnosed in the early stages and it was always identified when it has reached its later stages where the cure was almost impossible. But now, due to advancement in genetic technology, testing Kits are available which are easy to use by the individual.
One of the common causes of NP cancer is associated with the presence of Epstein Bar Virus, which is also the cause of many other diseases. This virus is proved to be found in NPC cells by many research institutes but this is not the only cause of the disease. Environmental toxic carcinogens, weak immune system and genetics are also the leading causes.

One way of detecting the NP cancer in its early stages is to go through biopsy. There are several types of biopsies, but Genetic Brush Biopsy is one of the easiest and non invasive ways for NP Screening. This technique involves the use of a mildly abrasive brush which is used to pick up the loosely attached cells from the nesopharynx membrane. These cells are then put to NPC Testing. Genetic brush biopsy is non painful method and is bearable for the patient.

It is commonly suggested that NP cancer is best cured when it is detected in the early stages, so it is important for an individual to go through NP screen as soon as he or she recognizes the symptoms as it will increase the likelihood of cure from 40-50% up to 90%.

How to Minimize Weight Gain After Menopause

Getting old and fighting the battle of the bulge is no picnic, especially for women. In a culture that sees aging men as more “distinguished,” and aging women as “old hags,” it’s no wonder that maintaining youth becomes a never-ending struggle and uphill battle for women.

Since most women gain weight as they age because of a slower metabolism and a less active lifestyle, it becomes apparent that this 15 – 20 pound weight gain did not happen overnight. Usually, by the time menopause “hits,” you have already gained about a pound a year. So how can you minimize all the weight gain after menopause?

First, you need to understand the many factors that have played a role in your changing body and attributed to your weight gain:

– You lose muscle tissue as you age, and fat burns fewer calories than muscle.

– You may have a condition known as, “hypothyroidism,” a deficiency of the thyroid hormone, which causes weight gain and effects women ages 40 – 50.

– Lack of exercise. Medical research has shown that just prior to menopause, women stop moving around as much, and tend to cut their activity in half, compared to their perimenopausal years. It is suggested that the lack of activity directly relates to the decrease of estrogen, which effects the signals the brain sends to the body.

– It may be genetics. If anyone in your family carries excessive weight around the abdomen, you will likely be predisposed to carry the weight as well.

– Hormonal changes due to menopause. Fluctuating hormones and a loss of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone, can wreak havoc on a woman’s body, causing water weight and bloating, and redistributing fat into the abdominal region, changing the woman’s shape into something unrecognizable. This weight gain is one of the most challenging and frustrating of menopausal symptoms to women, because in addition to tackling the stress, fatigue and mood swings, women must now overcome self-image problems, brought on by the weight gain.

Thankfully, there are solutions to menopausal weight gain, but the most important thing to know, is that you are not alone and there are things that you can do to minimize the weight gain:

– Exercise and Stay Active. Women who maintain or increase their level of physical activity during menopause, tend to not gain any weight. By staying active and exercising, whether it’s walking, jogging, running, biking, or taking an exercise class, you’ll be able to strengthen your body and muscles. The options are endless as far as choices, so just find something that you enjoy and you’ll be likely to stick with it. To increase your lean body mass, add strength training to your fitness routine, even if it’s a couple of times a week. Strength training helps in weight loss by increasing your muscle mass so that your body burns more calories, even when at rest.

– Eat smart. Be more conscious of the food choices you make, as they can have a detrimental effect on you. Indulging in fried foods may have been fine when you were younger, but can no longer be an option unless the notion of diabetes, heart disease and stroke is something you welcome. Because of your metabolic rate slowdown and loss of estrogen, your appetite increases, so be careful not to overeat at night. Reduce your calorie intake each day, cut down on carbohydrates and avoid foods that are high in fat, sugar, salt and calories. Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables, and make sure to include protein with each meal. Moving to healthy eating when you are used to the “bad foods” may not be easy, but it can and will have a lasting impact on your life, health, aging and the severity of your menopause symptoms.

– Take Supplements. Taking vitamins are a crucial part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, particularly for women facing “the change.” Many of the multivitamins, with their minimum requirements were adequate when we were younger, but as we age, we need more than the recommended dosage of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and amino acids. Women need to focus on replenishing those deficiencies due to hormone loss.

Calcium, Vitamin D, Magnesium: (to help absorb the Calcium) Necessary for strength and maintenance of bone mass, minimizes risk of osteoporosis.

Vitamin B Complex: Helps battle depression, emotional stress and fatigue during menopause.

B12: Restores lost energy.

Vitamin B6: Helps the liver regulate estrogen levels. Necessary for patients taking HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy)

Folic Acid: Essential for heart health and helps prevent cervical cancer.

Vitamin A: Necessary for health and growth of skin and aged-related skin conditions; also helps in prevention of cervical cancer.

Vitamin C: Helps mend wounds & burns; helps with collagen regeneration, which increases with age; helps adrenal glands and the body’s immune system.

Vitamin E: Is an essential vitamin for women experiencing menopause. It has even been dubbed “the menopausal vitamin” because it can act as an estrogen substitute somewhat successfully, relieving hot flashes, night sweats and mood swings. Maybe it should be called “the miracle vitamin!

Omega-3: Reduces inflammation, improves mood, decreases hot flashes during menopause, optimizes brain and heart health; Found in flaxseed, walnuts, and oily fish: e.g. salmon, halibut (1-2x a week)

– Drink more water. To prevent dehydration, which can cause water retention and bloating, make sure you increase your water intake.

– Get enough sleep. It’s been medically proven that people tend to weigh more when they are sleep deprived, so make it a priority and get the proper 7 – 8 hours of sleep each night.

There is no secret formula for avoiding weight gain, particularly as you age, but there IS plenty that you can do to minimize the weight gain perimenopause, during menopause and post menopause. The mantra for maintaining a healthy weight remains the same in any language. Watch what you eat, how much you eat and stay active.

Know More About Barrett's Esophagus

Barrett’s Esophagus was first diagnosed by Norman Rupert Barrett (1903-1979) He was educated at Eton and Trinity College in Cambridge. After graduating from St. Thomas Hospital in 1928 he became a surgeon at Thomas’ and Brampton Hospitals in London. He was one of the first medical professionals to recognize and describe the transformation of the esophageal lining.

The cells of the lining of the esophagus are normally flat and are known as “squamous cells.” In Barrett’s Esophagus the cells have changed to a more rectangular type of cell called a “columnar cell” which is the same type of cell found in your stomach.

The only way to tell if you have Barrett’s is have an endoscopy done at the doctor’s or other health professional’s office. If the doctor sees something that looks suspicious, he or she will take biopsies from your esophagus and send them to the lab for testing.

If the test comes back positive then you will have to be re-tested every few months, so the doctor can monitor the condition.

Although the medical community doesn’t know the exact cause of Barrett’s Esophagus, it is believed to be linked to the acidic stomach gases which have constantly refluxed into the esophagus. The stomach has a lining which protects it from the stomach acid but your esophagus does not, so the constant assault of stomach acid on your esophagus may cause the cells in the lining of the esophagus to change, resembling the acid resisting columnar cells present in your stomach.

The human body is amazing and has the ability to heal its self given the right help, and this just might be nature’s way of protecting the esophagus from any more damage, simply by changing the cell structure so it can tolerate the refluxed stomach acid.

The majority of people never experience any pain with esophageal cancer until the cancer has spread to their lymph nodes or other organs, so let your doctor monitor the situation if you have been diagnosed with Barrett’s. Although the chance of Barrett’s Esophagus developing into cancer is very small (around 1-1 1/2%) why take chances with your health?

If the health community is in agreement that reflux just might be one factor that is causing Barrett’s Esophagus, then one of the most important things you can do is find out the exact cause of your reflux and then stop your acid reflux from occurring. Once you do this you will halt the constant assault of acidic stomach gases that just might be causing more damage to the delicate cells of your esophagus.

Important Minerals For Your Healthy Body

Along with vitamins, minerals are essential to the body’s good health. They are inorganic elements that the body doesn’t make; instead, we obtain them from the foods we eat or through supplements.

It’s been reported that some 56 percent of adults in the U.S. use some kind of nutritional supplements, fueling an industry that sells more than $ 1.5 billion in products every year. If you’re spending money on supplements, you should know what you’re getting.

There are two kinds of minerals: trace minerals and macrominerals. The category of trace minerals includes iron, zinc, copper, selenium, iodine, fluoride and chromium. Trace minerals are only found in tiny, trace amounts in your body. Macrominerals are needed in larger amounts in your body – these are sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, manganese, sulphur, cobalt and chloride. Each mineral works in different ways to contribute to the body’s health and wellbeing.

The following is a list of each mineral, the foods in which it can be found, and what it does for your body. In future articles, we’ll discuss the various minerals in more detail.

Calcium is the most important macromineral for bone and teeth health. Without it, we couldn’t stand up and chew our food. Foods rich in calcium are dairy products, such as milk, yogurt and cheese. Canned fish, such as canned salmon or sardines, and green vegetable such as broccoli also provide us with needed calcium. Calcium is so important that some foods, such as cereals and juices, are fortified with it.

Iron helps oxygen get from the lungs to the rest of the body. It is also essential in the production of hemoglobin. Iron can be found in red meats, tuna, salmon, eggs, beans, potatoes, raisins and green leafy vegetables.

Potassium is essential for keeping the nervous system working. Foods such as bananas, tomatoes, broccoli, potatoes, citrus fruit, legumes and nuts are rich in potassium.

Zinc strengthens the body’s immune system and wards off illness and infection. Zinc can be found in legumes and meats such as beef, pork and lamb.

Magnesium is found in bones. It helps the body maintain a healthy metabolism and cholesterol level. It also converts sugar into energy. Spinach, beans, peas, nuts, seeds and grains are an excellent source for magnesium. Tap water also contains traces of the mineral but the amount will vary according to the water supply.

Manganese helps increase the absorption of nutrients such as biotin, thiamin and ascorbic acid. It helps maintain healthy bones and blood sugar levels and maximizes the function of the thyroid gland. It also contributes to healthy nerve function. Foods high in manganese are mustard and collard greens, kale, chard, raspberries, pineapple, lettuce and maple syrup.

Sodium, which is found in salt, maintains the body’s blood pressure. Since too much sodium can lead to health problems, it is important to realize that processed foods such as bread, tomato sauce, Chinese foods, and potato chips have high sodium content.

Copper protects the cardiovascular and nervous systems, as well as bones. It helps keep arteries from hardening and is needed for healthy hair and skin. The body also needs copper to produce antioxidants. Half of the body’s copper supply is in the bones and muscles. Copper can be found in beef liver, black-eyed peas, shellfish and cocoa.

Chromium controls the body’s insulin and normalizes sugar levels. It also lowers bad cholesterol levels and blood pressure. Foods that contain chromium are romaine lettuce, onions, tomatoes, brewer’s yeast, oysters, liver and bran. Since few diets provide enough chromium, a daily supplement is recommended.

Sulphur is known as the “beauty” mineral. It keeps hair, nails and skin strong. It plays a role in the production of collagen, which helps maintain the skin’s elasticity. Sulphur also helps with such conditions as eczema, psoriasis and acne. Sulphur can be found in lean meats, fish, eggs, milk, legumes, cabbage, brussel sprouts and turnips.

Cobalt is a part of Vitamin B12, which is needed for healthy red blood cells. It can be found in fish, nuts, green leafy vegetables and cereals.

Chloride helps the body maintain fluid in blood vessels and muscles and maintain healthy kidneys. Chloride can be found in table salt, kelp, olives, tomatoes and celery.

Iodine, which is found mainly in the thyroid gland, regulates the release of energy in the body. It also regulates the metabolism, so without iodine, a person would gain a great deal of weight. Iodine also contributes to healthy hair, skin, nails and teeth. Good sources of iodine are leafy vegetables, fish, shellfish, and onions.

Fluoride is a mineral that can be added to water or toothpaste, as it is not found in any significant quantity in foods. Fluoride is crucial for the maintenance of strong teeth and the prevention of tooth decay.

Selenium is needed to prevent heart disease and cancer. It works with Vitamin E as an antioxidant to help slow the aging process. Foods high in selenium are nuts, seafood, legumes, cereals and turkey.

The body uses many essential minerals, and a balanced diet is critical to ensure that it receives enough for optimal functioning. A deficiency of certain minerals can lead to severe health problems. If your diet is lacking any of these minerals, you should consider taking supplements to make up for any deficiencies.

Texas Turns Green: Super Green Foods Becoming More Popular Among the Health Conscious

Green foods have recently become a focus of modern natural health practices across Texas and the United States. Juice bars and natural health food markets in Austin, Dallas, and Houston boast smoothies with spirulina, vegetable juices with chlorella, and power shots of wheatgrass. Naturopaths have been known to prescribe super green foods to aid in the treatment of diseases ranging from asthma, to HIV, to lupus. While the incredibly rich mossy color of these supplements don’t always look appealing, most of us think, “Well, it’s probably good for me anyway.” But just how good may prove surprising. Better yet, you don’t even need a health insurance policy to cover it.

One pound of wheatgrass is the nutritional equivalent of twenty-five pounds of quality vegetables. Blue-green algaes, such as spirulina, have not only high levels of vitamins and minerals, but, pound for pound, more protein than meat or soybeans, and in laboratory tests, have proven instrumental in increasing the survival rate of cancer-infected mice. Alfalfa, a common ingredient in livestock feed, actually contains all known vitamins. Most of the time, only a teaspoon or tablespoon is required to gain nutritional benefit, and, really, we’re just starting to figure out the health benefits of these super foods.

While consuming these power greens may make our health insurance companies and spouses happy, most of us have trouble enough just pronouncing their names. It can be a bit confusing to figure out which green food does what. To make life a little simpler, here is a basic overview of some of the most popular super green foods, which can be easily located in the supplement section of any major natural health food market in Texas:

(1) Alfalfa

Some would argue that alfalfa, though a green food, is not a “super green food.” Many practitioners disagree. This well-known, seemingly ordinary grass, often fed to livestock and horses across Texas, is one of the most mineral-rich foods on the planet. Its roots can grow as deep as 130 feet, and in addition to all known vitamins, contains chlorophyll (considered highly nutritious when processed correctly), calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium. The minerals are present in a balanced form, which allows for maximum absorption.

Alfalfa is available in liquid, capsule, tablet, powder, and, of course, as the plant itself. It has been used to treat diseases ranging from arthritis to anemia, to bleeding gums, to cancer, and, like all other green foods, is still under study to discover the extent of its healing properties.

(2) Barley Grass

Containing iron, all essential amino acids, chlorophyll, flavonoids, vitamin B12, vitamin C, minerals, and enzymes, barley grass, too, is an often overlooked green food. It is highly nutritious, has been used to help treat stomach and intestinal disorders, and acts as an effective anti-inflammatory.

(3) Chlorella

One of the few edible species of water-grown algae, chlorella is virtually a complete food in and of itself. Its massive quantities of chlorophyll and protein in ratio to its size make it a power-punch for those lacking protein, as well as a storehouse of nutrition, with high levels of all the B vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin E, amino acids, and rare trace minerals.

Chlorella offers more B12 than liver per serving, and speeds the cleansing of the bloodstream. Its high RNA and DNA content are also believed to be agents in the fight against the effects of ultraviolet radiation. A good chlorella source needs to be factory processed, however, as its tough cell wall makes it difficult for the body to access its nutrients.

(4) Chlorophyll

Chlorophyll, while available in many forms as a separate nutrient, is also listed as a powerful component within many green foods. At first this may seem odd. After all, most in Texas and across the United States were taught that chlorophyll is a plant food, bound within a tough cell wall, and of little use to humans. And while it is true that chlorophyll usually needs to be processed in order to be more easily accessible to our bodies, research reports great benefits when properly consumed.

A better understanding of the cell structure itself has shed light on the situation. Hemoglobin is the oxygen-carrying protein found in red blood cells, whose central metallic atom is iron. The main, and quite simple, difference between a molecule of hemoglobin and a molecule of chlorophyll is that chlorophyll’s central metallic atom is, instead, magnesium. The two may, in fact, be so similar as to someday justify treatments for certain types of anemia with chlorophyll; experiments on anemic animals reported a return to normal iron levels after four or five days of chlorophyll treatment.

(5) Kelp

Kelp may be a bit more familiar than other green foods, as it is a seaweed common in Asian cuisine, and is actually often used in toothpastes. It can be eaten raw, dried, granulated, or ground into powder. Granulated or powdered kelp is a tasty flavoring, and can be used as a salt substitute.

Like all green foods, kelp is a rich source of vitamins, minerals, and trace elements. It is especially useful for its high B-vitamin and iodine content, and has, consequently, been used to treat certain thyroid diseases — possibly a major contributing factor to the obesity epidemic seen in Dallas, Houston, and many other Texas regions. Kelp is thought to be additionally beneficial to brain tissues and their surrounding membranes, the sensory nerves, spinal cord tissue, nails, and blood vessels.

Iodine tablets are often given to those in high-risk jobs involving radiation to help protect against its effects in the event of an accident. Kelp, too, is believed to somewhat combat the effects of radiation, probably due to its high iodine content.

Smaller sized fish possess less harmful toxins in comparison to large fish. Always make sure that your fish oil is getting analyzed for harmful pcbs and other contaminants. If it’s being examined it’s going to say so on the actual content label.
